The return to Lorien was delayed due to allowing Erestor enough time to heal to be able to ride for weeks on end.
The journey to Lothlorien was one of a clear division. As soon as the party left the gates of Imladris the division could be seen. Celebrian and her escort were leading the party and Haldir and the Lorien guard brought up the rear. In the middle separated from both groups rode Erestor.
When they set up camp the two groups would mingle and joke both ignoring Erestor once his essential needs had been filled and on the second night went as far as to light a second smaller fire away from the group and after handing Erestor his meal pointed him towards it.
Erestor for his part did not put up any kind of fight. He did not try to engage anyone in conversation. If he caught the occasional glances Rumil sent his way or the glares from Haldir he did nothing to acknowledge it. He was simply a shadow and after a week of traveling the distinction between the groups became more and more blurred.
The only constant that remained the simple fact that Erestor was not included.
“He’s so isolated,” Rumil whispered one night glancing at Erestor whose fire had simply burned out as the elf was unrolling his bed roll. He glanced at it as if considering lighting another fire and then shook his head as he lay down.
“Are you feeling sorry for him? He accused you of rape!” Haldir exclaimed as he gestured to the now sleeping elf already tossing and turning in distress.
“He has nightmares every night.”
“Rumil you are much too softhearted,” Haldir said with a sigh.
“I don’t know, it just feels odd.”
“Well we will be arriving tomorrow and we can put this nightmare and Erestor behind us,” Haldir gave one last sneer in the direction of Erestor.
“Do we have to tell Orophin?”
Smiling Haldir slipped an arm around his brother. “I think he may notice the trial.” Rumil groaned and Haldir tossed his brothers braids. “Go to bed.”
Arriving at Lothlorien to say Haldir was shocked to see the Lady standing at the outermost border would have been an understatement. Rumil actually reached over to his brother and pushed his mouth shut.
They watched as the lady approached Erestor pointed at him and whispered something to the seated horse. She threw a sack at his chest and he turned his horse and began a slow trot away from the group.
It was Rumil’s turn to be slack jawed as he watched Erestor ride out of Lothlorien never having actually entered the wood. This time it was Haldir who nudged the jaw closed and watched as the Lady of the Golden Wood approached them. They quickly dismounted, and she took Rumil by the arm and kissed his cheek.
“Now did you really think I would let that thing enter my wood? Come, my daughter and my favorite marchwardens have returned, Lothlorien will celebrate tonight,” Galadriel said as she pinched Haldir’s cheek.
