Erestor stood at the door to Glorfindel’s room watching as the Elf slowly packed up his strange study, staring at each piece before putting them away into the crates for their move to ‘Lorien. Sighing, he moved to the window and simply stared.
It had been nearly three months now since the meeting, Arwen had returned home and they were planning on leaving when the ‘Lorien party departed in another few days. He thought Glorfindel had met his match in Haldir. Both were cheeky, stubborn and as childish as his own child at times.
But watching Glorfindel so distracted, as to not know he was even there, convinced him he couldn’t do this to the other. Leaving the room he headed for the Nursery and was not surprised to find a full house. Sitting in a circle on the floor Arwen, the Twins and Haldir were all playing with Calanmir, who found Haldir the most interesting with his silver hair. He was yanking on the strands as he had done with Celeborn.
“Your son has quite the grip,” Haldir said, wincing slightly.
“I know…” Erestor started but at the sound of his voice Calanmir turned.
“Ada Ada!” He cried, trying to get to his father and crawling straight for him. Erestor shoved his black robes out of the way and got down on his knees for easier access. Lifting his son who wrapped his arms around his neck. He still wondered why he caused such a reaction in the babe.
Erestor joined the circle knowing Calanmir would not let him leave yet. Calanmir settled in his lap staring at Elladan and Elrohir. “Dan! Ro Ro!” He exclaimed pointing at the Twins and they smiled, glad he could already tell them apart. Then he clapped happily. “Da! DA!” Calanmir shrieked and Erestor knew Glorfindel had arrived as well.
He felt as the blond kneeled behind him and kissed his cheek. They still had not gone past kissing but he just didn’t feel he could be that intimate with Glorfindel. The very thought made him shiver.
“Cold?” Glorfindel whispered, lightly rubbing his shoulders.
“No, there is something I must do. Stay with Calanmir and his admirers for a while?” Erestor said shifting the child to Glorfindel. “I will return shortly. Be good.”
“Of course I will,” Glorfindel said with a grin.
“I was speaking to Calanmir but you most likely need it more,” Erestor chuckled.
“So, what were you all discussing?”
“Um…” Elladan started, looking around.
“Oh him, what of the…”
“Language Glorfindel,” Arwen said indicating the baby in his arms that was watching him intently, the expression reminding him of Erestor.
“He’s Mirkwood’s latest stable boy. He has a lovely hay loft to sleep in,” Haldir said snidely.
“It’s too good for him,” Glorfindel snarled and Calanmir petted his arm sensing his agitation. Glorfindel lifted the baby into his arms and with one hand lifted his shirt and blew a raspberry on his belly causing Calanmir to shriek in delight.
Walking to Elrond’s study he walked into the office and past Figwit, who’s jaw dropped, without a single glance.
“I need to talk to you.”
“I find that surprising as you haven’t spoken to me in months.”
“Is there a reason I should?” Erestor asked. “We were never friends and we no longer work together,” Erestor said, looking at the messy pile on Elrond’s desk.
“And you will leave for ‘Lorien in a few days…”
“About that… I think I want to change that.”
”You want to stay?” Elrond asked, surprised.
“Not particularly. I want to come back. A holiday of sorts.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I will speak frankly, as you were so kind to do to me for the past year.”
“Don’t bother,” Erestor said with a shake of his head. “I would be quite happy to never set foot here again, though I would be quite bored in ‘Lorien. I know this, it is the reason I left in the first place. But Glorfindel loves it here, even if he would not dare say it. So we will go and we will return in a few months, years, or centuries. I do not know.”
“It is your decision,” Elrond said.
“Of course it is, but I want my position back when I return.”
“As Chief Advisor?”
“No as a flying Warg. Did I have another position I was not aware of?” Erestor bit icily. “Is that a problem?”
“I would not think you would want to work so closely with me.”
“You make it sound like we would have to be civil. Didn’t the last, oh 3 000 years give you that impression? You don’t know the slightest thing about me and its clear I never knew you or I would have never…so do I or do I not have a reason to return?”
“Yes, whenever you return your position is yours,” Elrond said.
“Good,” Erestor said and left the room.
“Erestor wait,” Figwit started.
“There was always something that bothered me. How come you didn’t you know that you could have children? It’s clear you prefer the company of males.”
“Valar, no wonder I never allowed you to do anything of even minor importance. Obviously because I had never lain with anyone before,” Erestor snapped and left the room never hearing the crash in other room.
Heading back to the nursery he wondered how Glorfindel would take his news. When he entered he was surprised to just see Glorfindel and his son.
“Where did everyone go?” Erestor asked sitting beside Glorfindel and realizing Calanmir was asleep, sucking on his thumb.
“Lunch. I decided to wait for you.”
“Thank you,” Erestor said taking Calanmir and placing him in his crib. Smiling when the sleeping baby snuggled against him. “What would you say if I said I wanted to come back?”
“What? Come back where?” Glorfindel asked, confused.
“Why Imladris of course. Instead of going to ‘Lorien to live, just making it a holiday be it extended or short.”
“But after everything that has happened to you here. The way you were treated, the fact that Elrond still hasn’t even apologized, even after the Twins did. Publicly, I might add.”
“How could I forget?” Erestor asked, thinking back to the night. Thranduil had left with his disgraced son…
“That is one thing I hope never to see again,” Elladan sneered, walking back into the house. The hall was filled with Elves who were all curious to see what had happened, though no one knew the full story.
Elladan was the first to notice Erestor nearly blending with a pillar with Glorfindel standing beside the haunted Elf. He nudged his brother indicating he wanted him to look in that direction as well and he sighed.
Erestor didn’t look much better than at the trial and Elrohir was the first to approach. He lowered his head in shame when Erestor actually took a fearful step back from him. Dropping to his knees he reached for a trembling Erestor’s hand, which he only received because Glorfindel placed Erestor’s hand in his.
“Erestor, sorry does not even begin to show the regret and anguish I feel for the way I have been treating you the last few months. And over something as petty as you rejecting me after you had been so horribly violated by Legolas,” A gasp came from around as many understood what Elrohir was saying, though his words were vague.
“I know I do not deserve it, but I would like to beg your forgiveness for being such a fool. I have wronged you greatly and will try my best to win you friendship once again,” Elrohir concluded, never looking at Erestor’s face.
“Please stand,” Erestor whispered and Elrohir obeyed, though he still did not look Erestor in the eye. “I accept your apology Elrohir.”
Elrohir smiled, embarrassed. Then he embraced Erestor who stiffened slightly, but forced himself to relax. Elrohir released him, a slight blush on his cheek.
“Well um…after that anything I say just seems lacking…but I feel the same…I’m sorry Erestor,” Elladan whispered.
“I accept your apology as well,” Erestor said knowing Elladan had always had a problem expressing his thoughts openly, though on parchment he could rival the best.
“Erestor! Come back to me love!” Glorfindel said waving a hand in front of his face.
“Sorry, I was distracted for a moment there.”
“I noticed,” Glorfindel said, wrapping an arm around Erestor who then leaned against his shoulder.
“Do you want to?” Erestor asked.
“Do I want to what?”
“Return to Imladris, keep up.”
“That does not matter. The question is do you want to?” Glorfindel asked.
“If I never wanted to see this Valley again I would have never asked.”
“Then yes, I would be happy to return,” Glorfindel said with a smile.
“Alright, I believe you said it was time for lunch,” Erestor said touching his once again flat stomach.
Erestor lifted Calanmir into his arms and stepped outside the carriage, surprised to be welcome to ‘Lorien by the Lord and Lady followed by a large gathering of Elves. Erestor took in the sight and felt slightly overwhelmed. Almost instantly there was an Elf at his side.
“Thank you…” The glint of silver out of the corner of his eye caused him to turn his head. He was surprised to see Haldir and not Glorfindel. One look at Celeborn though showed him what had happened as the blond spoke to the Lord.
“Come, I’ll show you to your Talan,” Haldir said, leading Erestor away from the crowd and through the trees without a second glance. “I’m sure the Lord and Lady will understand and meet you for dinner. It will give you time to rest and freshen up.”
“Thank you Haldir,” Erestor whispered as he was lead away from prying eyes.
“Well let me show you your Talan,” Haldir said, producing a ladder seemingly out of nowhere. “Can you climb?”
”Did you forget I was born and raised here?” Haldir grinned.
“I think I did. After you,” Haldir said with a bow. Erestor smiled in return. Looking at his arm full of baby he stopped.
“Calanmir, hold on,” Erestor said and his son latched onto his neck then decided to scramble onto Erestor’s back and hold on.
“Horsey!” He exclaimed in delight and Erestor sighed.
“I blame Glorfindel,” he muttered as Calanmir grabbed strands of his hair to use as reigns. He climbed once he was sure Calanmir was safe and not about to move again.
Entering the Talan he smiled at the homely surroundings as Calanmir started wriggling on Erestor’s back and he sighed, lifting his son into his arms.
“Look, it’s our new home,” Erestor said Calanmir glanced about seemingly unimpressed.
“Glorfindel shall be along shortly. Let’s see your new bed,” Erestor said glancing at a crib with some carved mobiles. He placed Calanmir inside and he climbed out almost instantly. Erestor sighed, but made no move to put him back in. then he started to crawl about, getting a look at his surroundings. Every once in a while pulling himself up to stand before plopping back down to crawl.
“He will walk soon. He is nearing his 10th month, I suppose he should,” Erestor said as Calanmir crawled over to him, using the end of his robes stood on his short legs.
“When Glorfindel comes we will go eat.”
“Calanmir,” Erestor said calmly. Calanmir looked up at his father, let go of his leg and crawled over to Haldir.
“He wants you to go get Glorfindel,” Erestor explained.
“Oh how far I have fallen,” Haldir said and sighed. “I will indulge you little one,” he said and turned to the exit the Talan.
“Thank you!” Calanmir exclaimed waving wildly. But before Haldir left the top of the a blond head appeared. “DA!” Calanmir screamed as Glorfindel popped up with a grin.
“Well hello, its nice to know I’m missed,” Glorfindel said smiling though it quickly turned to confusion as Calanmir turned away from him and crawled over to Erestor.
***AN*** if you’re wondering why a 10 month old baby can say so much and is starting to walk I am going by what the great JRRT said that 1 year old elflings can sing and dance!
